Do Elevator Pitches Still Matter? Here’s Why I Say Yes
In an era of personal brands, social media bios, and instant connections, it’s fair to wonder: Are elevator pitches still a thing? Do we need that 30-second summary of who we are and what we do?
The answer? Absolutely! When it’s done with purpose.
An elevator pitch is a confidence tool for anyone stepping into new spaces, building relationships, or sharing their story. In 30 to 60 seconds, it helps clearly communicate who you are, what you do, and the value you bring—without rambling or second-guessing yourself.
Here’s the key: It’s not about having a perfect script. It’s about showing up with clarity and authenticity. And that all starts with one powerful shift...
One Key Strategy
Mastering your elevator pitch starts with intention. One strategy that makes all the difference: Start with your why—your purpose or passion. Leading with what drives you instantly creates a connection and makes your message more memorable. It’s not about being polished; it’s about being real.
But I didn’t always know that.
I’ll never forget a moment early in my entrepreneurial journey. A friend, someone I consider a mentor, introduced me to a philanthropic advisor at a nonprofit event. “Liz, this is someone you should connect with,” he said before stepping away. Suddenly, I was face-to-face with someone important, and I froze. I stumbled through an awkward intro, trying to explain my work, but my words didn’t match the passion I felt inside.
That moment taught me a valuable lesson: I needed a pitch that felt natural, clear, and aligned with my mission. So, I began leading with my why—the reason I’m passionate about empowering the next generation of Latina leaders. That simple shift gave me the confidence to connect authentically in every conversation that followed.
Why It Still Matters
Elevator pitches aren’t just for entrepreneurs or job seekers, they’re for anyone who wants to speak with purpose, clarity, and confidence. A great pitch builds trust, sparks connection, and opens doors, no matter the room you walk into.
Own Your Voice
Your story deserves to be heard, and owning your voice is the first step. An elevator pitch is about sharing your message with intention. When you lead with your why, you connect on a deeper level and leave a lasting impression.
In the June launch issue of The Latina Lens, I’ll share quick, actionable steps to help you tailor your pitch so it feels natural, aligned with your purpose, and powerful in any space you step into. You won’t need a script—you’ll have a strategy.
